The city lies below Žacléřským Žacléř ridge at an altitude of about 600 m and is called the eastern gate of the Giant Mountains. The first written mention of the castle Žacléř that guarded the trade route leading from the interior of Bohemia in Lower Silesia and gave its new headquarters, comes from r. 1334.
